Position, Direction, and Number Lines
Track an ordered position by fixing a direction, using equal steps, and distinguishing a location from the distance traveled to reach it.
The big idea
A number line places numbers in order at equal intervals. Moving right usually increases the value, and moving left decreases it. The number where a marker lands is its position; the number of unit spaces crossed is the distance traveled.
The same careful language helps with objects in a row: left of, right of, between, next to, and a stated number of spaces all describe relationships between positions.
Worked example
Start at 6 and make three jumps of 4 to the right. The positions are 10, 14, and 18. The ending position is 18, while the total distance traveled is 3 × 4 = 12 units.
The start is not counted as a jump. It is the location before any movement occurs.
How children may show it
A child may draw arcs for jumps, mark every landing point, label a route with +4 or −4, or place named objects in boxes along a row. Equal jump sizes should cover equal distances on the line even when some number labels are hidden.
Common mix-up
Children often count points instead of spaces, creating an off-by-one error. Ask the child to trace each movement from one point to the next. Another error is silently reversing left and right; mark the positive direction before beginning a multi-step route.
Try it together
Draw a line with only 0 and 20 labeled, using equal tick marks. Place a marker at 8, give two rightward jumps of 3, and predict the endpoint. Then hide the labels and use the equal spacing to recover them. For a younger child, arrange toys in a row and give position clues instead.
