At a glance

  • Part 1: Circle Jar B.
  • Part 2: Draw 2 more fireflies in the large Jar D.

1. Find the jar with five

Count each firefly picture once:

  • Jar A has 4 fireflies.
  • Jar B has 5 fireflies.
  • Jar C has 6 fireflies.
  • Jar D has 3 fireflies.

Only Jar B has 5, so circle Jar B.

2. Finish Jar D

The large Jar D begins with 3 fireflies. Count on from 3 to 5: 4, 5. Draw one new firefly for each number. That adds two fireflies.

A complete response circles Jar B, draws 2 more fireflies in the large Jar D, and writes 2 beside “More drawn.”

Check

Counting the finished drawing should give five pictures: the original 3 plus the added 2. Subtraction confirms the number added: . The result is not Jar A or C because their counts are 4 and 6, not 5.
