Fractions as Equal Parts
A fraction names equal-sized parts of one whole; the denominator names the partition and the numerator counts selected parts.
The big idea
A fraction describes equal parts of a chosen whole. In 3/8, the denominator 8 says the whole is divided into 8 equal-sized parts. The numerator 3 says that 3 of those parts are being counted. The whole must stay fixed when fractions are compared or combined.
One tenth means one of 10 equal shares. For a collection, divide the total into 10 equal groups and take one group.
Worked example
A window has 12 equal panes and 5 are blue. The blue part is 5/12 of the whole window.
For a collection example, one tenth of 40 gems is 4 gems because 40 ÷ 10 = 4. Ten groups of 4 rebuild the original 40.
How children may show it
Children may shade an area model, fold a strip, place a point on a number line, draw equal groups, or write a division equation. The model must show equal parts. Four pieces do not represent fourths if the pieces have different sizes.
Common mix-up
A larger denominator does not automatically mean a larger fraction. When the whole is the same, dividing it into more equal parts makes each individual part smaller. Also watch for a child counting visible sections without checking whether those sections are equal.
Try it together
Draw two same-sized rectangles. Divide one into 4 equal parts and the other into 8 equal parts. Shade one part of each and compare the sizes. Then shade enough eighths to match one fourth. Ask what stayed the same and what changed in the fraction names.
