Jar Jar’s Ruination Rule

Earn one jewelTumbled AgateLevel 2

In Star Wars, Jar Jar Binks is a character. A wildly dramatic review droid uses made-up screen-time estimates for a four-movie marathon. Use only the numbers in the table; no Star Wars knowledge is needed.

The droid calls a movie “ruined” when Jar Jar’s screen time is more than one tenth of the movie’s runtime.

Jar Jar Binks, looking far too pleased with the rule.
Movie Runtime Jar Jar time
The Phantom Menace 120 min 13 min
Attack of the Clones 140 min 14 min
Revenge of the Sith 130 min 8 min
A New Hope 120 min 0 min

Use separate paper for your solution.

  1. Find one tenth of each movie’s runtime. List the four threshold times in table order.

  2. Under the droid’s “more than one tenth” rule, which movies are ruined? How many movies is that?

  3. Another droid changes the rule to “at least one tenth.” Which movie changes classification, and how many movies now count as ruined? Explain why.
