Equal Groups, Multiplication, and Division

Use multiplication to combine equal groups and division to reverse the relationship by finding a group size or a number of groups.

The big idea

Multiplication and division describe the same equal-group relationship from different directions. If there are 4 groups with 3 objects in each group, multiplication finds the total: 4 × 3 = 12. Starting with 12, division can find either the size of each equal group or the number of groups.

Always name which quantity is known and which is unknown.

Worked example

Twelve gems are shared equally among 3 chests. The number of chests is known, so division finds the amount in each chest: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 gems per chest.

If the question instead says each chest holds 3 gems, then 12 ÷ 3 = 4 finds the number of chests. The equation looks the same, but the answer describes a different quantity.

How children may show it

Children may draw circles for groups, distribute counters one at a time, make an array, skip-count, use repeated addition or subtraction, or write a fact family. A labeled drawing helps distinguish “3 groups” from “3 in each group.”

Common mix-up

Unequal groups do not fit a multiplication or division equal-group model without another adjustment. Children may also swap the meaning of the divisor and quotient. Ask the child to complete the sentence: “There are ___ groups with ___ in each group, making ___ altogether.”

Try it together

Place 18 small objects on a table. Make 3 equal groups and describe the related multiplication and division facts. Then regroup the same 18 objects into groups of 6. Compare what changed, what stayed fixed, and how both arrangements appear in the same fact family.
